How it works
Add shares per expense
Record what something cost and how it splits — evenly or by custom shares. tally checks the shares add up to the total before it saves, so a balance can never be built on numbers that do not reconcile.
See per-person balances
Every participant sees a running balance in plain language — is owed, owes, or settled up — that updates the moment a new expense lands.
Settle up
tally works out the fewest payments that clear everyone, so nobody has to do the maths of who pays whom by hand.
Split with people who have not joined tally
Add someone to a split by name — no account and no invite required — and their share tracks exactly like everyone else’s. When they are ready to join, they claim that placeholder through an invite link and their balance carries over, rather than starting from zero.
Where this stops
tally splits expenses, tracks balances, and tells you the fewest payments needed to settle up. It does not move money between people — settling up is a payment you make yourselves, outside the app.

Does cost splitting work on the Android app?
Cost splitting ships on the web app today. It is not yet part of the native Android app.
Do the people I split with need a tally account?
No. Add them to a split by name, and they can join later by claiming that placeholder through an invite link — their balance carries over rather than starting fresh.
Does tally move the money for us when we settle up?
No. tally tracks who paid, splits the shares, and works out the fewest payments needed to clear everyone — the payment itself happens outside the app, the way you would normally pay a housemate back.
